Google Voice – Invite a Friend Opens: Get Yours Here

UPDATE: I now have invites.

I now have some invites to give out. Get the word out via twitter, your own blogs, and facebook. Remember that google voice currently doesn’t work in Canada, but there are ways around that. You won’t be able to get a Canadian google voice number right now, and unless you are in area code 403, you won’t be able to tie your regular phone in to google voice. To ensure the invites aren’t wasted, I will be somewhat selective on handing them out. Highest priority people are those who:

1. Have a 403 phone number, or a US phone number they can use (otherwise the invite is useless)
2. Really really want an invite
3. Make me happy by tweeting/facebooking/blogging this post. Hopefully we can get a free flow of invites going here.

Better start sucking up to me folks :)
Google is going to be opening up Google Voice to the friend invite system.

Starting today, we’re beginning to give out invitations to Google Voice users. If you currently use Google Voice, over the next few weeks, you’ll see an “Invite a friend” link appear on the left-hand side of your inbox.

Invites will show up soon and will be limited to three per account with more to come in time. Let’s try to spread the love.

If you want an invite, comment and I’ll do what I can to get them out when I get them. Tell your friends to check this story out and we can try to get you all invites as quickly as possible.

    Sounds great, sign me up!

  • Steve

Sadly they have geofenced Google Voice to enable only the US to connect. I had an invite some time back which now states that only the US can access googlevoice.

Why is it we are alwats treated as second class in this modern world. Most expensive cell phones and no Kindle :(

    Hey Steve,

Actually, there’s a post on this site which tells you how to activate your google voice account from Canada. Once activated, you can use it from here as well. I use my GV account all the time.

Still no invites in my account. I do check every day though.

    Hi George,

This is very exciting! My cell phone (RIP) just went through a full cycle in both the washer and dryer. Instead of replacing it I am embarking on a mission to make my Ipod touch a viable replacement (with no evil contracts!). I want to experiment with Google voice to see if it can help with that process. Even if it can’t i would still really really want an account. Any assistance you can provide would be very much appreciated.

    Best,

    Shawn

  • http://wifitalk.ca george

Good luck with that Shawn! Let us know how it works out for you, and post back if you have any problems. We’ll try to get it all worked out for you.

You have a googlevoice invite headed your way.

    George

  • Ian

George, you are a star with your excellent post about how to use the service from Canada! I have been really wanting to try this it out

Can I ..umm please.. join the club as well?

    thanks again

    Ian

  • http://wifitalk.ca george

There you go Ian, invite sent your way.

I’ve got one left folks. Hopefully you’ll all be kind when you get yours and will offer them up here too.

  • Angela Guo

Hi, I lived in Calgary, Alberta with a (403) area code. Can you be so kind to send me an invite? thanks.

  • http://wifitalk.ca george

Alright, all my invites are gone. I’ll hopefully get some more though.

  • Shawn Meikle

    Hi George,

Thanks again for the invite. Oddly, another google voice invite appeared yesterday based on the request form i filled out. Weird. Looks like i will be able to contribute some invites soon. Ok, set up has been tricky. Here is what i have done so far…

set up skypeIN number (in Oklahoma [580] just because…)

downloaded hotspot shield (remember to delete cookies or the invite won’t open)

got a google number (405 area code)

now I have not been able to call the google number from my home phone (rogers 905 area code)

I got operator assistance and the call still failed – they have no idea why.

  • Shawn Meikle

    Update,

I am having difficulty activating the voice mail. I get the following dialogue box….

“You now need to activate Google Voice on your Verizon mobile phone.
Enter the following exactly as written, as if you are dialing someone:
    *714054454664
Press “Send” or “Call” on your phone to dial that number. The phone will appear to make a call and then hang up. When that is completed, you are done!
    Got an error? Learn more”

it asked my for a carrier so i just put in verizon. I assume I can’t access this feature unless I am on a verizon network, skype doesn’t count?

  • http://wifitalk.ca george

    Hi Shawn,

Well good to hear you got through the hard part at least. I take it you’ve gone through the google activation code part right? And your skype-in number is linked to your google voice account?

  • Daniel M.

    Hey Guys,
Great site, I too am searching hard for a Google Voice account, have been for some time now bit sadly nothing as of yet. I too am trying to do something similar as Shawn (I am getting very annoyed by cell providers in Canada charging an arm and leg, so I’m trying to stick it to the man so to speak), and ever since I heard about google voice, I figured this could be a very google solution. I’ve tried using skype but it seems to hard. Anyway let me know if yo guys have anything left and I would be forever grateful!!!!

    Keeping my figures crossed
    Dan

  • Jason T.

This is great! I am waiting for an invite from google too. If anyone here has any they can pass out it would be great. I would be happy to return the favor!

  • http://wifitalk.ca george

Thanks for the comments guys. I’ll keep trying to get more invites. As soon as hotspotshield is updated to work with snow leopard I might be able to get a few more going. Keep checking back and we’ll get you all invites.

  • Momo

I’d like to be invited too :-)
    thanks alot george!!

  • Gord

I have a 403 area code. If you get any invites please fire one my way.

  • http://ultimatetw.com Al

Anyone have any idea when Canadian numbers will be available other than southern Alberts (403)?

Also does anyone know when invites are coming out? I’ve been waiting since the day before the wheel was invented.

  • Cory

Hey George, I also have a 403 number and would love to have a GV invite.

If you get any more please send me one.

  • David_ca

    Hi Geroge,
Sure would like an invite if you have one kicking around.
    thanks

  • Rich

Hi there. I love the idea of using Google Voice because cell phone companies in Canada are terrible. I avoided getting a cell up until now, but I’m going to need one and I want to keep my costs down as much as possible. If I had an invite then I could probably get my costs down to $10 or so per month just for access to the ‘net through my phone. So: could I have an invite when you have one free? Cheers!

  • http://c-a-s-s.org Kyle

I read your article about getting google voice to work in Canada and I’m really intersted in trying it out (I also happen to be in area code 403).

Assuming it works well, I’d consider implementing it across the entire agency I work for and would gladly point all our employees and my friends to your blog to follow your well written instructions.

Hope to hear from you soon with an invite,
    Kyle

    Hi guys,

I’m working on invites constantly. I haven’t gotten any more myself for a little while now and my friends with accounts are getting pretty annoyed with me for asking :P

    george

  • http://www.wifitalk.ca george

I’ve got an invite now, with possibly one more coming. Next one to post gets one.

  • Dylan

    Hey George,
It’d be great if you could send me that invite… When I heard about Google Voice initially I was excited but when I found out they had no service in Canada it was very disappointing. But hopefully, with the help of the excellent guide you’ve posted here (it was very thorough), I’ll be able to get it working. Sadly I do not have an American phone number, nor do I live in a 403 area code but all the same it’d be great if I could have that invite.

  • Kenny Dangelo

    Hi George,
Just got a new MyTouch and would love a Google Voice invite. Have a US number. Please please please?

  • Geoffrey

I would greatly appreciate an invite. I have a US number to use it and it would be most helpful. I hope that you can send it.

    Thanks,

    Geoff

  • Richard76

I just found a way to get this working on my iPhone along with a MagicJack. I would love to get it set up as I do a lot of long distance calling that is very costly but I don’t have an invite. :(

  • Jarek

I would love an invite. I have a current US phone number, and I’m very eager to try this terrific service. Thanks in advance for the invite (if you still have some) :)

  • http://www.wifitalk.ca george

    Hi Guys,

I’m scrambling for invites as quickly as I can from friends/acquaintances/complete strangers from all over the net. Unfortunately, demand is vastly outstripping supply at this point and I get 10 requests for every invite I scrounge up.

I am still working on it though and have managed to give quite a few out. All I ask is for patience and that you give back an invite or two to other users as soon as you get them yourself.

If you happen to have an invite available could you toss it my way? I’m working on setting up a shared asterisk PBX for my friends to allow unlimited cell calls through it. Have been really wanting to add GV to it.

    Thanks.
