Official Google Voice App for iPhone Is Here
The official Google Voice app for iOS is finally on iTunes.
The techcrunch story has a lot of the details on the history of the app, but, briefly, it has been a long time in coming. Apple approved, then removed a third-party app called GV Mobile, which was essentially a Google Voice front-end, saying that the app violated Apple’s terms of use for apps in that it replicated functionality of the built-in phone application.
Recently, Apple revised its app guidlines, and GV Mobile (now GV Mobile+), as well as some others have been re-admitted. The official Google Voice app has been in the review queue for a while and just today has been approved.
But only in the US.
This makes sense, seeing as how Google Voice is officially only available in the US, and it is fairly easy to get around the geoblocking on this app as well. You’ll just need a US iTunes account (see here), and then follow my instructions here. I just tested it out and have the app on my Canadian iPhone.
The app does not work with “gmail voice” as you do need a full Google Voice account in order to log in to the app.
The app doesn’t seem to work with the iPod Touch (even the 4th gen which has a speaker and mic, and the ability to use the mic-enabled headphones), so this seems like an oversight. Let’s see if Google fixes this and allows iPod Touch users to use the app as well. No word yet on if it works with the iPad.
At least the app is here now (for some of us). Now we just need Google to expand Google Voice service to other countries.
Push notifications for text messaging are very quick and work as expected. It’s a nice way to get around expensive text messaging fees if you don’t subscribe to a plan.

Wow, I’m glad Apple finally got off their high horses and approved the app.
You’re an idiot. Sorry, just had to say it. The reason that it won’t work on the iPod Touch EVEN WITH A MICROPHONE is that the iPod Touch is not a telephone.
Google Voice is no magic pixie fart that enables non telephones to magically make telephone calls. Google Voice is a switchboard. It is NOT voice over IP.
It will not run on a NON telephone until it is voice over IP.
Thanks for the comment, but that is not why it won’t work on the iPod touch. You can quite easily get the Skype app, or Fring, or Truphone, or Bria, or any other VOIP app for the iPod touch, making it into a defacto telephone. You can then link that account to your google voice account.
That is after all, the basis of what this site is about.
nobody, you are an idiot, more so than george. gmail recently added a voip client that interfaces with google voice, so the possibility of that working on the ipod touch is alive and well. please check your facts next time
“more so than george” Uh thanks?
No love for the 4gen Touch??????? IS this a Google issue or an Apple issue (too useful)
haizzzz…. I just created a US store account and downloaded the app to my Computer (in Australia) however when I went to sync the app to the iPad, I get the message ‘The application “Google Voice” was not installed on the iPad “” because it is not compatible with this iPad.’
I tried turning off location awareness and have the iPad set to the US account I created… – anyone else try it and have this happen? Any idea of how apple are able to have done this? Any known work arounds?!
in b4 ‘because it’s only for iPhone’… yaaaah…. just realised it tkxs, silly me!
Still doesn’t do what I want it to do. I want to be able to ring my Vonage or work phone, then have it connect to the number I’m trying to reach–take my cell phone out of the call altogether. GV Mobile+ (for jailbroken phones) does this.
Too bad. Maybe next time.
