Skype for iPhone
On Tuesday, March 31st Skype released their iPhone/iPod touch client on the app store. However, as cbc.ca reports, the client will not be available to Canadians. Apparently the problem is a codec-related patent issue and Skype is unable to offer their mobile client in Canada.
There is a workaround for Canadians and it involves creating a new US iTunes account:
Open iTunes, log out of your iTunes account.
Go to the App store in iTunes and select US as your country
Find a free app (Remote from Apple is a good one) and click on it to get the app
It’ll prompt you to create a new account. Do so. Select “none” for your payment method and enter a bogus US address.
Download the skype app. Sync to your iPod/iPhone.
Log out of your new iTunes account. Log back in to your Canadian one.
Apple has a help article on how to do this, just be sure to select the US as your country in the first step.
